Will “Jeongnyeon” Surpass Ratings Of “Queen of Tears”?

tvN’s weekend drama “Jeongnyeon: The Star Is Born” has been drawing attention with a significant increase in ratings, making us wonder whether it can surpass the ratings of “Queen of Tears, a major hit from earlier this year.

The sixth episode of “Jeongnyeon, written by Choi Hyo-bi and directed by Jung Ji-in, recently set a new viewership record for the series. With Queen of Tears topping the charts during the first half of the year, viewers are now keen to see if Jeongnyeon might follow a similar success path.

In the episode aired on October 27, we saw Yoon Jeongnyeon, played by Kim Tae-ri, as a minor character, ‘Soldier 1,’ in the National Theater’s performance of Jamyeonggo. Meanwhile, Heo Young-seo, portrayed by Shin Ye-eun, played the lead role of “Gomigeol”. Both characters are shown trying to bring depth to their roles on stage, despite the differing levels of prominence in the play.

According to Nielsen Korea, episode six recorded a national rating of 13.4% among paid households, securing the top spot in its time slot across cable and satellite channels. Starting with a 4.8% rating, Jeongnyeon has seen an impressive rise, nearly tripling its initial numbers by the sixth episode, largely due to positive word-of-mouth buzz.

For comparison, “Queen of Tears” started with a 5.9% rating in March and grew to 14.1% by its sixth episode, eventually peaking at 24.9% before its conclusion. With Jeongnyeon on a similar upward trend, expectations are high for its potential to match or exceed Queen of Tears‘ success. “Queen of Tears” has been a great success for the makers and have continued to generate revenue for Studio Dragon.

Set in post-Korean War 1950s, Jeongnyeon is about the journey of Jeongnyeon, a naturally gifted singer and her struggle to become a top National Theater actress.

Jeongnyeon: The Star Is Born” airs every Saturday-Sunday on tvN at 9:20 PM (KST). Episode 7 will air on 2nd November. It is also available to stream on Disney Plus.
