Speaking at a cafe in Samcheong-dong, Seoul, Shim said, “This movie made me think, ‘I can do this. I can try something new.’ Showing a variety of films to the public has become a turning point for me.” She added that The Killers felt like an acting experiment and confirmed that it’s possible to keep making films like this.

Shim admitted that, as an actress, she is always questioning herself and thinks that she is not good enough.

Drawing a comparison, she mentioned Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki. “When you watch his documentaries, Miyazaki is often frustrated, saying, ‘I don’t know’ or ‘It’s not finished yet.’ I feel the same way about acting. I never know if it’s right.”

She went on to say that acting is a field full of uncertainties, and it might take a lifetime to find answers. However, films like The Killers motivate her to keep trying. “Even though I’m unsure, these projects make me want to act and create”, she said.

Despite her doubts, she talked about how she continues to act because there are still stories that she wants to tell.

The Killers is a cinema anthology based on Ernest Hemingway’s short story of the same name. Four of South Korea’s top directors—Lee Myung-se, Noh Deok, Jang Hang-jun, and Kim Jong-kwan—each directed their own unique interpretation of the murder story. Lee Myung-se, known for Duelist and Nowhere to Hide, served as the creative director for the entire project. Shim Eun-kyung showcases her wide acting range in each director’s distinct style.

The Killers is set to premiere on October 23.
