The episode 8 of “Iron Family” aired on KBS2 TV on 20th October 2024 where Lee Da-rim (played by Geum Sae-rok) was preparing for her long-awaited eye surgery, but her mother, Go Bong-hee (played by Park Ji-young) was frustrated due to not being able to have enough money for Da-rim’s eye surgery.
The episode began with Bong-hee finding out hidden cash inside the air conditioner at her family laundry. Turns out, the money was secretly buried by her in-laws, Im Man-duek (played by Park In-hawn) and Ahn Gil-rye (played by Kim Young-ok).
They told her that they saved the money for the sake of family and Da-rim’s eye surgery, but the origin of the money made her hesitant to use it.
On seeing the concern of Bong-hee, Man-deuk tried to reassure her, saying, “You didn’t see anything. If you know where this money came from, you might end up in jail too. We did this for you and Da-rim. Just use it for Da-rim’s surgery.” Ahn Gil-rye also tried to assure Bong-hee by saying, “Do you think we should bury it again? We risked our lives for this money. It’s for you and Darim.”
Bong-hee, confused between morality and her daughter’s eyes, decided to use the money and told her in-laws that she will use 800 million won for the surgery and pay back everything to them. So, they don’t end up in jail.
With the funds covered, she goes to the hospital with Da-rim where they are told that they can proceed with the surgery on Da-rim. Bong-hee is overjoyed hearing this, but Da-rim asks her how she managed to have this much money, which her mother does not answer by saying “Just focus on getting better.”
However, Go Bong-hee hears that a fire breaked out in the laundry which destroyed everything, including the 3 billion won which Bong-hee had gathered for Da-rim’s surgery. The fire was caused by Seo Kang-joo (played by Kim Jung-hyun), who admitted he accidentally started it by lightning a cigarette.
Kang-joo apologizes saying, “I’ll take the full responsibility and cover the damages”. However, this was not enough to make Bong-hee feel any good.
Adding to her stress, Baek Ji-yeon (played by Kim Hye-eun), a wealthy customer whose clothes were damaged in the fire, demanded, “Make sure to exclude my compensation from the insurance. My clothes were the most expensive ones here! My son will pay for the rest. We’ll even call the remodeling team that worked on our house to fix up this place.”
In a desperate move, Bong-hee, along with her in-laws, dug up another hidden stash of cash, this time amounting to 7 billion won, which was buried in the ground by her in-laws. Thanks to this, Da-rim’s surgery was able to proceed and Bong-hee tearfully promised her in-laws, “I won’t let you go to jail. I’ll do whatever it takes to make this right.”
The episode ended showing a preview where Da-rim opened her eyes and smiled brightly after the surgery, indicating that the operation was a success.
