The tvN drama “Jeongnyeon: The Star Is Born” is seeing a sharp increase in viewing ratings, reaching similar numbers to the hit show “Queen of Tears”. Since its debut on October 12, the drama, set in post-Korean War 1950s, follows the story of Yoon Jeong-nyeon (played by Kim Tae-ri), who is a talented performer.
The cast includes popular stars like Kim Tae-ri, Jung Eun-chae, Shin Ye-eun, and Ra Mi-ran. The show is directed by PD Jung Ji-in, known for “The Red Sleeve”.
The first episode entertained viewers with impressive singing performances from the actors. It began with a rating of 4.8%, which nearly doubled to 8.2% by the second episode. Ratings continued to climb, hitting 9.2% in the third episode and 12.7% in the fifth, achieving double-digit ratings just four episodes in.
According to Nielsen Korea, the show recorded an average rating of 13.6% in the capital region and peaked at 15.0%. Nationwide, it achieved a 12.7% rating, topping all channels in its time slot. In comparison, SBS’s “Judge from Hell”, which was airing prior, recorded 11.5% on the 18th, with ‘Jeongnyeon’ closely following at 9.2%. The latest episode of ‘Jeongnyeon’ garnered 12.7%, bringing it close to ‘Judge from Hell’s’ highest rating of 13.6%.
This year, tvN dramas have seen significant success with titles like “Marry My Husband”, “Queen of Tears”, and “Graduation”. “Queen of Tears” created a sensation and set a high bar for ratings, and “Jeongnyeon” is following a similar upward trend, raising hopes for future ratings.
“Queen of Tears” started with a 5.9% rating and reached 13.0% by its fourth episode, showing just a 0.4% difference compared to Jeongnyeon’s fourth episode rating. It ultimately achieved a record-breaking peak of 24.9%, making it the highest-rated drama in tvN’s history.
In the third episode of “Jeongnyeon”, the character Yun Jeong-nyeon (played by Kim Tae-ri) turns down a proposal from Moon Ok-kyung (Jung Eun-chae) and successfully performs a scene from “Chunhyangjeon” after ten days of training.
In the fourth episode, Jeongnyeon cuts ties with her mother, Cha Gong-seon (played by Moon So-ri), and faces challenges while pursuing her dreams of becoming a singer.
Viewers have expressed their enjoyment, calling it “a fun drama without romance or melodrama,” and commenting on how engaging and authentic it feels, with lines like “It felt like I was watching a real performance” and “I was amazed by Kim Tae-ri’s portrayal.”
Jeongnyeon airs every Friday and Saturday at 9:20 PM on tvN. It streams for the global audience on Disney+.
